In the latest escalation of increasingly strict travel restrictions, China is demanding that passengers from certain countries quarantine for 14 days BEFORE traveling to China. Although it is not currently clear, it is likely such travelers will also have to complete 14 days of quarantine upon arrival, or possibly 21 days if they are flying into Beijing.
China's Foreign Ministry is yet to make an official announcement, but the new measures have been confirmed by the embassies of at least seven countries, according to the SCMP. These countries include Saudi Arabia and Algeria, while Kazakhstan, Sudan, Pakistan and Egypt said the restrictions would apply to Chinese citizens.
Passengers have also been told they will need to take direct flights in order to receive their health code on entering China. If no direct flight is available, they will be required to book a route with only one connection. Those traveling from Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, are only permitted to take one specific flight.
After easing travel restrictions slightly in September, China banned visitors from certain countries, such as the UK, Belgium, Italy and India, in November due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in those countries.
Foreigners entering China are currently required to present negative test results for coronavirus and related antibodies and submit to 14 days centralized quarantine (plus seven days home quarantine in Beijing).
It is not clear if the new quarantine-before-arrival rule will be rolled out to include other countries. Different embassies have released different information, but both Egypt and Sudan said travelers would need to present documents from their employer or school to prove they had quarantined before boarding a flight to China.
